1.4 Critique –

From the foregoing description we see that there is a rich heritage of, both, the Ardhamāgadhī and the Śaurasenī canonical and canon–equivalent literature and a large number of these works cover the subject of ‘Voluntary Peaceful Death’ “Samādhimaraṇa” in greater or lesser detail.

The very fact that nearly thirty canonical and canon–like treatises deal with the subject of Samādhimaraṇa, not to mention a score of canon explanatory and subsequent independent treatises exclusively written on this subject, underscores the importance of the subject under scrutiny.
