Animal stories

You lie there pig,
Embedded in slime –
Grey, thickened ooze
From a hundred shanties,
Cooking pots and used fires.

Your eye, small and sharp,
Gleams from its black surrounds,
And the snout rests on the ridges of mud.
In that black, concertina disc
Two nostrils suck the universe of smells.

Oh pig, become my guru.
Teach me how I also can wallow
In the wonder of life
When all around I see
The gone forest, the lost creek.
